I love how Melanie Martinez just keeps it rolling with this aesthetics/visuals that actually goes down to the very lyrics themselves. The way she makes use of a lot of kitsch imagery of dolls, children's toys and preteenhood youth as metaphor for just how immature adults can still be and how it affects the young looking at us now. I also feel that Melanie nailed the visual pop of childrens' art, doll-like fantasy looks and its pastek kitsch image to subvert them all because of the dark themes she explores, but at the same time she's recognizable by using them. It doesn't feel ungenuine, as other artists do use these imagery as well but they move on to the next or it only served as a visual for a music video. With Melanie, you can imagine all the dolls and toys gossiping at your back, or the old notebooks we used to have feel like scribbled ramblings of a kid we sort of know and feel concerned for vandalizing it with crude drawings and misspellings of how crummy this kid's day went, as tall, hulking adults gaze down at us as if we're children. We can imagine playgrounds and amusement parks because of Melanie Martinez's careful and very specific themes and motifs, but these funhouses aren't happy and innocent places all the time, as predators abound and lurk it in plain sight or breaking a relationship in such a joyful place, making it heartbreaking but also just frustrating. Overall, it's such a creative way of using innocent visuals to just tell us that not everything is going well, even though the pastel decor and the tea and sweet cakes are nice.
