"There is a place in the afterlife people under hypnosis describe as a soul cleansing, a place where gem-coloured rays of light shine through every inch of your soul, cleansing your spirit of the trauma it had experienced during your last lifetime. I remember reading about this sitting on the roof of my garage. A few weeks later I sat in my bathtub with my guitar and stayed up all night writing a love song about this light. It was also the very first song I ever wrote for this album."

I love how while everyone is rushing to ride the wave of the next trend, Melanie is moving at her own pace (hence the snail) giving each song the closure it deserves. Light Shower made me a fan but seeing the progression of Portals and now my favorite song getting a MV makes me a STAN. This is what an album should be.

Here is my interpretation: love should be patient and slow-paced, just like the snail in the video. Despite facing numerous obstacles along the way, the snail never gives up and perseveres through the journey. Another intriguing detail is the flowers blossoming from the trail of mucin the snail leaves behind. To me, this could be interpreted as healing along the journey of the relationship Melanie is in. When the snail reaches the water, instead of impulsively/carelessly crossing through the rushing stream, she opts for the safer route of taking the bridge. This can serve as a metaphor for our own relationships, reminding us to think twice before making impulsive decisions. Overall, I'd say the message is of patience, healing, perseverance, and thoughtful decision-making in our relationships.

My interpretation is that the snail represents her slow journey towards finding true love, or the 'light' in her life. Snails are extremely slow, they are patient and persistent. Even though she's moving at a slow pace, and it seems to be so far away, she's still persisting and continuing to follow the light. The thing she has been 'searching for forever'. She makes her journey through all kinds of terrain, different life cycles. She moves from the dark, dry dessert, a place that would be awful for a snail, a bad place in life, finally into the oasis where it feels lush and green, the perfect place in life. Even when she's faced with an obstacle, the river, she finds a bridge to get to what she needs. Behind her she leaves a trail of slime, and as the moisture hydrates the land, flowers bud and grow. To me the trail she leaves behind everywhere that she has been, represents her past, her journey in life. And the flowers are the lessons she's learned along the way and the beautiful things she's been able to create and leave behind. When she reaches the cave and is finally able to embrace the light, she is freed from her shell and begins to float. She's finally found the joy in her life and has been able to fully embrace what that means to her (whether that's love for another person, love for her own life, happiness, letting go of past regrets) she's letting the positive things into her life. And in doing so she now feels light and unrestricted. As she floats you can see how relaxed and peaceful she feels. She's not longer trapped in her old shell as she moves forward in life in this new form

This really shows how it takes time for the right person to come into your life and cleanse you of all the negative energy. I love how the shell breaks at the end, it indicates how slow the process can be but once you are out of that shell and you are fully healed, you allow yourself to love and be loved. ❤

Okay, that made me cry my heart out. It's like how slow you can heal and break your shell to be free and give yourself permission to love and be loved. Sometimes, you search for the light as fast as you can, but you're so slow. You need to shower, heal, and just let the light in, not chase it. It's so deep, so real, I relate to this process so much, but i still didn't break my shell and let the light in because it's a slow process, respect it, live the moment and heal in my own moment. Thank you, Mel. Thank you. That clarifies so many things in my heart. I'm crying.

The Nymph, portrayed as a snail, starts off in a desert. Deserts are incredibly bad and unhealthy for snails. She slowly follows a ball of light, showing that it takes her a long time to find love. After a while, the ball of light leads Nymph to a rainforest- an ecosystem in which snails thrive. The ball of light, representing love, has brought her somewhere much safer than where she was before. She then swallows this ball of light, representing her acceptance and reciprocation of this love. This is just my interpretation anyway :)

Just because not a lot was happening doesn’t mean there weren’t stunning visuals and lots of little details to pick up on. I wasn’t bored for a single second watching it. it's amazing to me how creative melanie is. it's really very difficult to come up with music videos that have a big message. when she "ate" the light, she suddenly hatched out of her shell. I think it's supposed to symbolize how the love she was looking for set her free. It's very beautiful how she shows a really deep message through such "strange" things. It's interesting how she comes up with stories for portals and how aesthetically she does it. We love you, Melanie.

Just a simple theory from me. What I like to understand from this mv is that Melanie is following this ball of light which represents inner peace. She is also seen as a snail, why? Snail represents patience, protection, cycle of life, transformation, and resilience, etc. In this mv, she is the snail to show how hardworking she is. Since snails are slow, it takes a lot of time which can also be interpretation of finding inner peace. To find inner peace, it takes a lot of time. As she goes on this journey, you can see flowers growing behind her trail, which can be represented as healing and growth. Despite being stuck due to the river, she doesn't stop and continues. At the end, she reaches the light and eats it which can represent that she finally found inner peace. tell me why i *JUST* woke up and this was the first thing on my fyp and i got a jump scare 😭😭 besides that, the way she interprets the meaning of the song. like she started off as a shy snail and slowly started making flowers grow, to coming out her shell, showing she’s finally happy with herself.

I love the snail metaphor, maybe to the world she is small and insignificant, most people say eww when they see the snail slime trail but in this video she produces life, hinting to her beauty inside, when you find that thing or that someone who’s full of light and energy that it helps you break out of your shell and become the person you have inside and were always meant to be , no matter how the world views you ❤️❤️❤️

Music resonates with us all so differently. When I was 17 my high school boyfriend ended his life. He was a water sign, I’ve never felt love like his. We lived in the California Desert.., I feel like every word Melanie wrote was for me/us I just want to run into another dimension. He makes me feel like I’m on drugs even 12 years later.

I feel like this has something to do with her dream and also the resemblance of her being a snail reminds me of like how slow it is chasing after that one person that just brings u so much peace. You can’t imagine how many times I’ve listened to her songs over and over again. Right now, I was feeling terrible and decided to put this song… it’s very calm, peaceful and beautiful… But honestly, I think I’ve never seen the full video of this song until now. I can’t deny that I’ve considered Portals a little bit weird in terms of visual aesthetics, but it doesn’t matter, it’s Melanie after all, and I love it. Her music is my comfort and I enjoy every song of her.
