When first watching this, I thought it was a weird way to visually represent the meaning behind void, rebirth by escaping depression and anxiety and an old version of yourself, but when you rewatch it you notice all the little hidden details and symbolism that Melanie uses to express herself. In the first scene, Crybaby, or Melanie, pushes herself out of a heart, and becomes a new creature, both showing the rebirth of Crybaby as a new creature, and how Melanie is letting go of an old version of herself. She then enters a door while looking behind her, making sure she's not being followed, and runs into the Void where she is chased by herself, or at least creatures that look similar to her. She then goes into another room where I can only assume she's watching herself incubate, and appears to be judging herself before she's even a new person. The creatures then hatch and just menacingly watch as she crawls away and falls into a new room full of bugs. In the room there is what looks like a window where you can see a bright star, and because we know Melanie likes to put tarot card references in her music videos, when you look up what the star means it says that upright it can mean faith and hope, but reversed can mean insecurity, discouragement, and faithlessness. The bugs in the room represent her insecurities and she takes a sword to one of the bugs and it flowers grow out of the bugs wound, which could represent the card being turned upright by letting go of insecurities and discouragement, and having faith and hope for a new beginning. She then falls through a tunnel, and somehow has a g-n, a sh00t5 herself and moths come out of her, and moths can represent change, transformation, endings, and death. She then falls out of a tower and the video end, but the tower is symbolic as well, the Tower Tarot Card upright represents disruption, change of life, and awakening, showing that she has completely left her old self behind, and is ready for a new life. That's just what I could interpret from the music video, but art is for the viewers to interpret however they'd like to, so I'd like to hear what other people think!

This album really means a lot to me. It came to me at a time when I needed the most help and was so deeply hurt inside and struggling so much (yes I got help) but it just really feels so relatable and magical at the same time. I am now in highschool. Melanie Martinez had been my coping mechanism in a dysfunctional family. My family had often fed into my insecurities, so in order to mute them out I would listen to Melanie. To me, the Void hits all of those wounds in such a beautiful way. I have listened to every song out in this album...And it is truly amazing. I love the song and I love how she portrayed the suicidal thoughts, the feeling of being trapped, being bound, over thinking and anxiety I know it's hard to portrayed it iam so proud and even the others lyrics, the other is so relatable example: "I hate who I was before" and the first line I that I think I related to "no one here but to judge me in" iam so proud and the way she act I liked it and I love to how she being crybaby at the start of the video and when she clawing her way to out on the sac she become the nymph I love it so iam proud and this is the number 1 my favorite in the portal era (Sorry if there a wrong spell others)

PORTALS means a lot to me. It's the album that I've been needing the last years (my favorite album from this year), music talking about anxiety, life and death, all of that with that amazing fantasy aesthetic that I've loved since I was a kid. I honestly love all the songs and all of them makes you think about complicated issues that need more repercussion. Thank you Melanie for this masterpiece

The visuals the story the choreography IS CRAZY I'm so happy to see her fully express herself thru music and video she truly is a star. Many of the comments have a perfect explanation of the music video shows how much she can say without even speaking the cinematography IS PHENOMENAL

Melanie, I am so sorry people are commenting on your body and doing things to hurt you. But I just wanted to say the way you interpreted the details and everything into this music video is art. You are a beautiful person, and nobody should be commenting on somebody else’s body. You are perfect the way you are and you need to know that, you deserve so much better and I’m happy you’ve found your way out of the void. I am so truly sorry about everything that happened to you in your past, and I hope your at your best. You are truly an amazing singer, you make great music videos with great meaning and you’ve helped so many people heal including me. The choreography in the video was amazing as well along with the scenery/ scenes in the video, thank you Melanie, I love you girl! Here are some details I’ve noticed in the music video! At first during the opening scene we see a beating heart, then we see inside the heart which we see crybaby (old form) inside the heart confused as to what is happening, then she rips the heart open to reveal her new form which means she has a new version of herself that she feels comfortable with. The lightning then strikes her in the next scene, she says “injected by society” which can mean people commenting on the body which is another reason to the lighting striking her down. Then we see an eye behind her which could mean her looking at herself and being unhappy with who she was before, she also makes a stabbing movement to her stomach which could mean the old version of herself is dead. The lyrics “I fear I won’t live to see the day tomorrow, someone tell me if this is hell” could mean she was struggling and thought she wouldn’t make it through, and was so depressed it felt like hell to live through. Then in the next scenes we see her stepping into a room with a crowd of creatures. They then start to run after her with loaded guns pointing at Melanie and shooting at her trying to shoot her down. The lyrics “the void ate me” could mean she was going through a rough patch and thought she was being eaten by the thoughts in her head. The creatures continue to shoot at her but she makes it through to the next scene. In the next scene we see creatures in some sort of bubble which could me her looking in a mirror and judging herself. In the next scenes we see her crawling out of a cave which could be a part of the void she is stuck in and if you look closely you can see the creatures behind her we saw a few scenes before this. In the next scene when she makes it past the cave we see her in a room full of bugs. The lyrics “I’m looking for a doorway” could mean she is looking for a way out. Then we see her with a knife walking and jumping onto the bug saying “collect my insecurities and turn them into beauty” she then cuts the bugs head off and the blood turns to flowers which could mean she took her insecurities and looked at them as beauty. Then a few scenes later we see her falling down into a pit and takes a gun and shoot’s herself. This could mean she was dealing with very bad suicidal thoughts and wanted to end it all in spite of all the body shaming and thoughts she had been dealing with. (PS I’m so so sorry Mel) Then we see her getting wrapped in worms or intestines and getting dragged as moths and butterflies come flying. This could mean she was still in pain but getting through it overtime and making it out of the void. Then in the last scene we see her running towards the light and she’s being followed by moths and butterflies and she escapes the void. This means she escaped the void she was in and made it through. IM SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU MEL!

everything about this is PERFECT. the realistic looking heart and veins and sound of the blood and heart pumping, the amazing and smooth effects for mels nymph face blinking and moving, amazing choreo and outfits, realistic looking forest, slug, moths, and smoke, AND how it looked so real when she was falling and breaking out of the heart, and small and clear audio. this is amazing. no hate and im not trying to compare artists, but i think its unfair that taylor won over her for the music vids, cause taylor is more popular.
